There are a number of temporary and permanent visa options available for people who wish to migrate permanently to Australia. Skilled and professional workers, with the required qualifications, may choose from the following types of permanent visas.

 

 

 

 

General Skilled Migration Visa

There is a range of visa options for skilled workers who wish to live in Australia and who do not have an employer sponsoring them. These include options for skilled people applying as an independent migrant as well as those sponsored by a relative, or nominated by a State or Territory government.

 

Skilled Independent Visa

This is a permanent visa for those under 45 with skills in high demand. This visa allows you to migrate to Australia if you have good English skills and a profession, skill or trade in high demand.

Currently, there are several skills in “high demand? in Australia. If your occupation is on the Migration Occupations in Demand List ("MODL"), your General Skilled Migration visa application will receive priority processing.

A sampling of current MODL occupations (current as of May, 2008) is listed below. Please contact our office for a complete list of MODL eligible professions and trades.

 

Managers and Administrators: Child Care Coordinator, Engineering Manager

Professionals: Accountant, Anesthetist, Architect, Chemical Engineer, Civil Engineer, Occupational Therapist, Dermatologist, General Medical Practitioner, Various Computing Experts, Surgeons, Surveyors and Nurse Specialists

Associate Professionals: Chefs, Dental Technicians

Skilled Trade: Cabinet Maker, Floor Finisher, Carpenter, Locksmith, Painter & Decorator, Tree Surgeon and Welder

 

Skilled Sponsored Visa

This is a permanent visa for those unable to qualify for a Skilled Independent Visa. Sponsorship by an Australian resident is required, as is good English skills and an occupation on the Skilled Occupation List.

 

Skilled Regional Sponsor

This is a three year temporary visa for those unable to qualify for a Skilled Independent or Skilled Sponsor Visa. Applicants must be under the age of 45 and must be nominated by a State or Territory, or eligible relative. After living in Australia for 2 years and working in a Specified Regional Area, Skilled Regional migrants may apply for permanent residency.

 

Recognized Graduate

An eighteen month temporary visa for engineering graduates of recognized overseas institutions with skills in high demand in Australia.

 

Activities Visa

There are a wide range of temporary and permanent visas for people to participate in specific professional, cultural or social activities, or to receive medical treatment.

 

Doctors and Nurses

Due to high demand, there are special temporary and permanent visa options for doctors and nurses who wish to work in Australia.

 

High Caliber Business Talent

The High Caliber Visa is a permanent resident visa, renewable every 5 years, for high caliber business people who are 55 and over, and is owners or part owners in an overseas business, and who have a commitment to participate in the management or ownership of a new or existing business. High Caliber applicants must be sponsored by an employer, State or Territory.
